What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. Dyslexia refers to a cluster of symptoms, which result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading. Students with dyslexia usually experience difficulties with other language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words. Dyslexia affects individuals throughout their lives; however, its impact can change at different stages in a person’s life. It is referred to as a learning disability because dyslexia can make it very difficult for a student to succeed academically in the typical instructional environment, and in its more severe forms, will qualify a student for special education, special accommodations, or extra support services.

What is The Orton-Gillingham Approach?

The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia.  It is most properly understood and practiced as an approach, not a method, program, or system. In the hands of a well-trained and experienced instructor, it is a powerful tool of exceptional breadth, depth, and flexibility.

Has your child been diagnosed with dyslexia? You're in the right place. I'd love to help.

Hi, I’m Lucy Dalton. My students call me “Miss Lucy”. I’d love to help your child become a confident and proficient reader!

A little about me...

I received my B.A. in English from Sewanee: The University of the South, in 1984. After moving to Atlanta, I attended Agnes Scott College to complete my teaching certification coursework, and began teaching for The City Schools of Decatur immediately after. Since then, I’ve taught grades K-5 as a classroom teacher, a gifted program teacher, and a remedial reading teacher in Gwinnett County Public Schools, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (North Carolina), and Hess Academy, a private school in Decatur, Georgia. It was at Hess that I found my passion for helping dyslexic kids. I have both a Master’s and Specialist’s Degree in Education from Georgia State University. Upon completion of my practicum with The Dyslexia Resource at The Schenck School, under the supervision of Josie Calamari as my OGA fellow, I became a full-time associate practitioner with the Orton-Gillingham Academy. I tutor in-person at my home in Sandy Springs, and also virtually. I look forward to spending the rest of my working life helping every dyslexic child I can. Nothing could be more rewarding!

What do Parents Have to Say?

My twins have been seeing Lucy for a bit over a year now and the progress they’ve made has been amazing. They actually enjoy reading now and love to show us what they know! Lucy is caring, kind and patient, but firm when she needs to be. She adapts lessons to each of my daughters needs, personalities, and learning style. Lucy keeps me in the loop and regularly connects with our teachers at school to make sure her tutoring is strengthening and coordinating with what my twins are learning.

Lucy has truly become part of our family and I fully expect her to be at high school graduation in nine years cheering on my girlies!

Lucy Dalton's tutoring gave our boys a huge boost in reading, spelling and confidence. Both our boys have dyslexia and ADHD. Working on reading / spelling isn't exactly their idea of a good time- normally! Lucy made sessions for my older son so much fun that my younger son was soon asking to have sessions, too. Lucy helped us figure out a schedule that worked and we were thrilled to get in place the extra support we knew our kids needed to thrive in their fast-paced school environment.

Lucy, assisted by her sweet little dogs, gave our boys the individualized attention and structure they needed to be able to focus enough to make progress. She made sure her lessons dovetailed well with what they were doing at school and helped me think through the steps we were taking to meet our boys' needs. It's invaluable to have a skilled OG instructor work one-on-one with your child. Lucy brings decades of teaching experience to boot, and remains an extremely valuable part of our boys' success team.

My family found Ms. Lucy in the summer of 2021. We had just received our daughter’s dyslexia diagnosis. She hated reading, and was way below grade level. After working with Ms. Lucy for a year and a half, our daughter’s reading improved so much! Without Lucy, our daughter would not of passed the second grade—thank you Ms. Lucy!

Lucy is a such a kind, patient and nurturing tutor for my daughter. She is always organized and ready to begin the second my daughter arrives. Her positivity has reinforced confidence into my daughter’s reading, arming her with OG skills to decode words and to read at a faster pace. She’s gone out of her way to speak with our school, ensuring she is staying on pace (or ahead) of the current curriculum so that my daughter has more confidence in the classroom. Lucy’s dogs are the perfect addition to her teaching environment, giving my daughter snuggles while she works.

We are so lucky to have found Lucy and would recommend her to any student struggling with reading.

Lucy Dalton has been crucial to our daughter’s reading success. She motivates our daughter with kindness and appropriate rewards, so she is excited to attend tutoring sessions. Miss Lucy, what our family calls her, communicates with the support team at school to ensure our daughter receives the help she requires outside of school. As a result, our daughter has become a more confident reader, which is a necessary basis for learning to come. Our family is so thankful to Miss Lucy for the fluent reader our daughter has become.

Katherine K.

Lucy Dalton has been an absolute game-changer for my dyslexic son. In less than a year, she transformed his confidence and reading abilities from below grade level to above grade level. Her tutoring has been a godsend and a huge blessing for our family. Highly recommend her services!
